Coastal, Traditional & Timeless Living Room & Entryway Design
This coastal and traditional interior design project for a growing family was definitely worth the wait!
This Westlake, Ohio home has great bones and an open living room and entryway, but the clients wanted their space to feel more comfortable, relaxing, and organized. The existing furniture in their living room and foyer wasn't maximizing the available space of the rooms, and it had become an extension of their kids' playroom...which is such a common challenge with young families.
The long, narrow footprint of the living room with the beautiful bay windows wasn't being used to its full potential, and these busy, working clients wanted to reclaim this room as a designated, more "grown up" place for entertaining family and friends.
Here's how we transformed this dark living room and foyer to a more traditional, classic, and timeless space:
Behind The Design
We carefully designed the floor plan to maximize available seating and make the room most functional, while still allowing space to access the seating areas:
A secondary "cocktail/coffee lounge" seating area was created by the windows, complete with a bar cabinet stocked with our clients' favorite wines and entertaining essentials. The coastal-inspired artwork, décor and accessories make happy hour feel like an #instavacation!
Introducing a lighter, neutral color palette with new paint colors on the walls and ceiling, and fabrics and textures in shades of ivory, blues, and grays along with furniture pieces made from lighter wood tones gave the home a welcoming and relaxed but timeless style.
New custom window treatments in a soft, off-white linen allow more light to filter in from the gorgeous oversize windows:
Selecting performance fabrics and materials for the sofas, chairs, and area rugs along with furniture protection made these spaces family-friendly:
See this gorgeous wood hutch? This is a family heirloom, a wedding gift to my clients' great great grandparents. To incorporate this special family antique, we intentionally brought in traditional inspired pieces with subtle coastal style and layered in various wood tones:
The framed leaf artwork placed on either side of the hutch along with the storage baskets and simple décor accents allow this piece to shine yet feel right at home in this living room design:
I love incorporating pieces with such personal history and a story into client designs!
In the foyer, the previous furniture pieces weren't maximizing the space and scale of the open concept and high ceilings:
We added a fresh paint color, new lighting, and larger scale furnishings to tie in perfectly with the coastal, traditional style of the living room and help these two spaces flow together seamlessly:
A faux potted plant, bouquet of tulips (our client's favorite), and neutral décor accents create a welcoming entryway for guests, while a personalized gallery wall provide a designated place to display cherished family memories:
We took care of all of the furniture purchasing, tracking, and delivery coordination and handled supply chain delays and challenges so our busy working clients could stay focused on their priorities, like their family and their careers.
Every detail was managed on their behalf, right down to arranging and styling those accessories and pulling together the finishes touches:
And the best part?
Our clients are thrilled! From their 5-star review:
“My favorite part of the process was how organized and responsive Natalie was. As a super busy working mom, I truly did not have time to commit to keeping track of everything, and Natalie did it all for me. The ability for Natalie to manage nearly the entire process was so helpful!”
Now our clients get to enjoy their light, relaxing, timeless and traditional space for cocktails or coffee, family gatherings...or even a brief work from home session (PS: The coffee table has a built-in laptop lift. Because we're always designing for function *and* style!).
